A Brief History of Halloween Cards

Everyone is familiar with the popularity of Christmas cards these days. Even now, kids can’t wait to get one in the mail with a promise of money from their grandparents.

But did you know that Halloween cards were just as popular back in the old days? Or should I say Hallowe’en.

Halloween CardsThe Halloween greeting card (or postcard) was born back in the 1890 and was as popular as Christmas cards in those days. They’re still sought after today as nostalgia items. Not only did the Halloween card establish the familiar visuals (black cat with arched back, flying witch on broom), it also told the story of the way we lived…some things surreal and strange.

An artist named Ellen Clapsaddle was quite the big deal back in the postcard business. Her illustrations were quite ethereal. She was the great-granddaughter of the American Revolutionary War hero, Major Dennis Clapsaddle. It’s interesting to see here because women were treated as second-class citizens back then.

Halloween Card DesignBy the 1950s, the world became even more extremely bizarre. What are these people on…including the kid? It’s Twilight Zone territory.

Postcards are still great ways of communication here in San Antonio. Let us design and mail something fun and funky for you!
